School Counselor's Role
The Role of a School Counselor:
Today's school counselors are vital members of the educational team. They help students in the areas of academic achievement, personal/social development, career development, and becoming productive, well-adjusted adults. School counselors are involved daily in character education, personal and social skills development, violence prevention, conflict resolution, career and college planning, and much more.
Students can meet with the school counselor on an individual basis. The stress children face today is much different from that of ten or twenty years ago. Children need support in their times of personal crisis. Talking to a counselor can help eliminate or reduce their feelings of frustration, anxiety, depression, etc.
Students are able to meet with the school counselor in a group setting. Group counseling consists of a series of meetings with a small group of students who are experiencing some of the same challenges. Group counseling is great way to help students collectively enhance their goal setting abilities, organizational skills, behavior management, accepting responsibility for their actions or choices, and so on.
Throughout the academic year, the school counselor meets with students, parents, staff, and community members to discuss social issues, testing, career choices, colleges, scholarships, and financial aid. The school counselor also visits classrooms providing guidance on age appropriate topics that are of immediate importance for every student.
Appointments are able to be made to meet with the school counselor by completing a "Request to Meet the Counselor" form that is available in the office. Parents and teachers may also refer a student to meet with the school counselor. Should an unexpected issue or emergency arise, the school counselor's door is always open for those in need.
